Why Your Breath Is More Than “Just Breathing”

Most people think breathing is simple:
Inhale oxygen.
Exhale carbon dioxide.
Job done.
But your body is far more clever than that.
Your breath is not just keeping you alive — it is helping decide how much oxygen reaches your muscles, brain, organs, and nervous system.
And this is one of the reasons breathwork and yoga can be so powerful.
Your Blood Has an Oxygen Delivery Service
Imagine your blood is running a delivery company.
Inside your red blood cells is a protein called haemoglobin. Think of haemoglobin as a little oxygen bus.
Each haemoglobin “bus” can carry four oxygen passengers.
When you breathe in, oxygen travels into your lungs and hops onto these buses. Then your blood carries that oxygen around the body to wherever it is needed.
Simple enough.
But here is the fascinating part:
Your body does not just need oxygen in the blood.
It needs oxygen to be delivered to the right place.
Carbon Dioxide Is Not Just Waste
Many people think carbon dioxide is simply something we need to get rid of.
But carbon dioxide plays a vital role in helping oxygen get off the bus.
When a part of your body is working harder — for example, your muscles during exercise, or your nervous system during stress — carbon dioxide rises in that area.
That rise in carbon dioxide changes the local environment, making it easier for haemoglobin to release oxygen.
In simple terms:
Carbon dioxide tells the oxygen bus where to stop.
It is like a delivery signal saying:
“This area needs oxygen — drop it off here.”
So carbon dioxide is not the enemy. It is part of the intelligence of the body.
What Happens When We Over-Breathe?
When we are stressed, anxious, rushing, or stuck in survival mode, we often breathe too much, too high, too fast, or too shallowly.
This can cause us to blow off too much carbon dioxide.
And when carbon dioxide drops too low, oxygen may not be released as efficiently into the tissues.
So even though we may feel like we are breathing more, the body may not be using oxygen as well as it could.
This is one reason people can feel:
Tired but wired
Light-headed
Tense
Breathless
Panicky
Foggy
Exhausted
Disconnected from their body
The answer is not always “take a bigger breath.”
Sometimes the body needs to relearn calm, steady, efficient breathing.
This Is Where Yoga and Breathwork Come In
At Serenity Studio, and through The Serenity Reset, breathwork is not just treated as a relaxation tool.
It is a way of gently training the nervous system.
Through conscious breathing, yoga, stillness, and relaxation practices, we can help the body feel safer, calmer, and more regulated.
The aim is not to force the breath.
It is to build a better relationship with it.
When the breath becomes slower, smoother, and more controlled, the nervous system often begins to soften too.
And when the nervous system feels safer, the body can move out of constant defence mode and into better recovery, repair, digestion, sleep, and clarity.
Yoga Is Not Just Stretching
People often come to yoga thinking they are coming to stretch tight muscles.
But yoga is so much more than that.
When we combine movement with breath, we are speaking directly to the body’s internal regulation system.
Gentle movement improves circulation.
Breathwork supports oxygen delivery.
Stillness teaches the body it is safe to pause.
Yoga nidra and relaxation help the system deeply reset.
This is why a yoga class can leave you feeling not just looser, but lighter.
Not just stretched, but steadier.
Not just relaxed, but more like yourself again.
A Simple Metaphor
Think of your body like a busy town.
Your blood is the road network.
Haemoglobin is the oxygen bus.
Oxygen is the passenger.
Carbon dioxide is the traffic signal showing where oxygen needs to be dropped off.
Your breath is the control centre.
When breathing becomes rushed and chaotic, the whole traffic system becomes less efficient.
When breathing becomes steady and regulated, the delivery system works better.
That is why learning to breathe well matters.
What We Practise at Serenity
In my sessions, we use a blend of:
Breathwork
Yoga
Nervous system regulation
Gentle strengthening and mobility
Yoga nidra
Relaxation practices
Somatic awareness
The goal is not performance.
The goal is connection.
We are not trying to bully the body into changing.
We are learning how to work with it.
Why This Matters If You Feel Burnt Out or Overwhelmed
When you have been under stress for a long time, your body can start behaving as though danger is always nearby.
Your breathing may change.
Your muscles may grip.
Your sleep may suffer.
Your mind may race.
Your energy may feel unpredictable.
Breathwork and yoga give the body a different message:
“You are safe enough to soften.”
And sometimes that is the message the nervous system has been waiting for.
Come and Try a Session
If your body feels tired, tense, wired, overwhelmed, or disconnected, come and experience this work for yourself.
You do not need to be flexible.
You do not need to be fit.
You do not need to know what you are doing.
You just need to begin.
